I picked up a book this past week and as I skimmed through it, I noticed a headline, “Only Superman Can Fly.” It made me think of the superman movies from the eighties. Superman takes off for a flight and Lois Lane goes with him. She is holding on tightly as they soar through the sky.
I remember watching that movie as a young man, it was amazing! After all, it is every young boys dream to take off running, lift off the ground and soar through the air. I remember watching as Lois and Superman flew for a while. Then Lois slowly begins to lose her noticeable nervousness of flying; she is ascending through the atmosphere hanging on to Superman. She gradually begins to let go of her strong grip to the force that had kept her flying. As she releases her hold Lois begins dropping to the ground. She discovers she can’t fly at all. After being in the sky for a few minutes Lois began to think she had received this supernatural power to fly on her own. At the end of a deep gasp of breath, Superman swoops down and catches her before she plummets to the ground.
Jesus is our Superman; we can’t fly on our own. Living a life of faith isn’t all about “us.” It isn’t about what we can do on our own. Rather, it is about “who we are” when we are hanging on to Superman. The only way we can experience the supernatural things of Jesus (our Superman) is to hang on and fly where He flies. Jesus said, “I am the vine…he who abides in Me and I in him bears much fruit…and without Me you can do nothing!” You aren’t Superman. You can’t save the world on your own. You are only “super” when you stay connected to Him. And by the way Lois…next time…don’t let go…it’s a long way down!
We would love to hear from you! Tell us what you think.
